I started fly fishing when I was about eight years old on the Scottish highland lochs and rivers, as well as local stillwaters such as Elinor and Ringstead Grange. I Was the head bailiff and fishery manager at Ringstead Grange trout fishery in the late 1990's.
I have taken Rainbow Trout to 14lb (fishery record), Salmon to 25lb (largest Salmon caught on the Ness sytem that year), Sea Trout to 14lb and wild Brown Trout to 8lb. I live, eat and breath fly fishing and hope I can pass on my passion to you !
What is Fly fishing, and how is it different to coarse fishing?
As the name suggests fly fishing uses an artificial fly to imitate what the fish are feeding on manly nymphs and dry flies. The flies are tied using natural and man made materials like feathers, animal fur, deer fur and wool etc. Fly fishing is an art form and a skill, the first thing you need to learn is how to cast the fly which takes time but is very rewarding when you get it right. Fly fishing targets mainly game fish like Trout, Grayling and Salmon.
Coarse fishing is much easier to learn, the casting can be learnt very quickly. Coarse fishing uses completely different rods and reels and bait like maggots or worms, targeting coarse fish like Carp, Pike and Tench. Which can also be targeted with a fly rod.
